CLEAN UP EVEREST AND PROTECT ITS ENVIRONMENT

If you care about the planet and Mount Everest, and want to help end the plastic and pollution crisis on the mountain, join us! We can't solve Everest's pollution crisis without you.

EVEREST: A SEA OF PEOPLE AND POLLUTION

Tourism has become the economic lifeblood of mountainous Nepal, but it also threatens the region's ecological stability. The influx of foreign trekkers boosts the economy while bringing in mountaineering gear, human waste, and toxic litter. During peak season, this waste clogs the trails, turning the picturesque mountains into one of the world's most environmentally challenged areas.

MICROPLASTICS INVADE THE WORLD'S HIGHEST PEAK

The Everest region, often called the "Water Tower of Asia," stores freshwater in its glaciers that feed major rivers like the Yangtze, Yellow, Ganges, and Mekong. As these glaciers melt, microplastics are released into rivers and oceans, posing a threat to wildlife and humans. These tiny particles, too small for water treatment plants to filter, can carry toxic substances that may contaminate the entire food chain. It's time to clean up Everest and consider solutions like compostable bags to help protect our planet.

GLOBAL WARMING PUTS EVEREST IN DANGER

Mount Everest is in the midst of a crisis. Trash pollution is just the beginning—glaciers around Everest have thinned by over 100 meters in just 60 years, and since 2009, the rate of thinning has nearly doubled. The rapid melting of glaciers is destabilizing the local landscape, which could cause lakes to overflow and burst, making downstream villages and trekking routes unsafe.

2024 EVEREST CLEAN-UP: WE'RE TAKING ACTION

Local government forces and several NGOs hold cleanup drives every year, working hard to clear the trash left by climbers. In February 2024, the NGO Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC) introduced new rules requiring climbers to bring their waste back to base camp. 1EVEREST has also joined the effort to clean up Everest. We believe in the social responsibility of operating in an eco-friendly way, and as we grow, our charitable impact will grow too. Our goal is to inspire individuals and businesses to adopt transparent, environmentally responsible practices.

  • PBAT

PBAT is a biodegradable polymer thatre quires less crude oil during production than plastics and breaks down quickly in a compost setting without emitting methane gas or creating toxic residue.

  • pla

    PLA

PLA is a monomer derived from organic, renewable sources - like sugar or corn.It requires less energy in production and emits less greenhouse gas in decomposition than plastic.

  • corn starch

    CORNSTARCH

Cornstarch is an organic substance that is harvested from corn and biodegrades quickly, without emitting toxic gas.

  • BPI

Check for the BPI logo on compostable bags — it's widely recognized as the gold standard for compostable products in the U.S. This certification ensures that an item will break down quickly, completely, and safely in well-managed municipal and commercial composting facilities.

  • TUV

TUV Austria seal is widely regarded as the most comprehensive certification for compostable goods, and is recognized worldwide. "OK Compost HOME" certification means these products have passed the most rigorous home composting tests, ensuring they biodegrade quickly and cleanly in a home environment, like a garden compost pile.

  • THE SEEDLING

The Seedling logo is a European Certification that proves a product is certified industrially compostable according to the European Standard EN 13432. This is a 3rd party certification by TÜV AUSTRIA authorized by European Bioplastics. Usually certified in addition to OK compost Industrial to ensure compostable certification throughout the European market.

  • WWF

WWF certification typically refers to various sustainability and environmental certification programs supported or collaborated on by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). WWF is dedicated to protecting the natural environment and ecosystems, and its certifications are generally associated with sustainable development and eco-friendly production and consumption.

  • SPCC

Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC), acommunity-based NGOestablished by the local Sherpa people of Khumbu, is thelead organization working to manage waste in the Khumbu region. SPCC has been continuously working to keep Khumbu clean through development of appropriate waste management infrastructures, and integrating sustainable waste management approaches.

MOUNTAIN GUARDIAN

We believe in taking care of those who take care of Mount Everest. Generations of people have grown up at the foot of Everest, and their survival is closely linked to its environment. They are the ones who collect the trash left by climbers from altitudes as high as 8,000 meters. They live and work on Everest year-round, and they deserve to earn a fair living wage.
